Message from the Chair

Clearly, our work is not done. As we look forward to 2025, we plan to advocate for the renewal of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program coming up for renewal in the state legislature in Spring 2025 and, with our Lively Issues slated for early 2025, identify topics of interest in our community for us to direct our programming for next year. Stay tuned!

After the November 5th election, we’ll have more time to devote to offering educational opportunities to our community on topics that support the League's mission and positions or topics on which the League has some expertise. One avenue to accomplish this is through our Speakers Bureau that we are in the process of rebooting. Some topics for presentations we have in the works include the National Popular Vote (NPV), Redistricting/Gerrymandering, Understanding Your Ballot, Civics 101, Observer Corps, Local Government and Natural Resources. Look for more on this in 2025!

In closing, we need to remember that no matter what happens on November 5th, the fight for democracy has a long history and we need to stay vigilant in carrying on the mission to defend our democracy. We still have important work to do!

Referendum on Sevastopol Ballot

Sevastopol has a referendum question on the November 5 ballot to increase funding. If you live in this district, it’s time to collect information in order to vote wisely. Watch for presentations, mailings from your district, and the media to become informed, or call your local district office with questions.

Election Sign Guidance

• If you are putting out a League yard sign, you cannot also have a sign for a candidate or party.

• League members serving in policy making Leadership Team roles, voter service coordinators for registration or candidate forum events, moderators and screeners for candidate forums, and action coordinators that oversee League advocacy must remain nonpartisan and not put out signs for candidates and/or parties.

• Vote signs - Put out two weeks before the election.

• Vote Tuesday signs - Put out no earlier than the Wednesday the week before the election.

• October 31 (Halloween) - Take signs in for the day/night.

• Remove signs the day after the election.

2024 LWVDC Candidate Forums

• Circuit Court Judge (February),

• Sevastopol Town Board (March) and,

• Wisconsin Representative to the Assembly District 1 (October).

Each was well attended. THANKS to the many members who volunteered and made each event run smoothly and efficiently.

Thank You Voter Registration Assistance Volunteers!

As this election cycle starts to wind down, Voter Services - Registration team leader, Kathi Braswell, would like to take a few minutes to thank you for your assistance with our Voter Registration Assistance/education efforts during the past month.

As a result of your efforts, the LWV Door County was able to connect with over 200 citizens of Door County.

We were in each of the 4 high schools connecting with 172 students, 40 of them 'clicked' on the MyVote.gov QR code. (There isn't an easy way to confirm whether the registrations were completed, but it is a good start). Barb Graul used her magic to get us into Sturgeon Bay HS for the first time in 5 years. Yea! Barb. We were able to update our high School voter Education PowerPoint with data made available via Civic Center. Thank you Jennifer Fischer!

In addition, between the ADRC, NWTC (North and South), and the Hispanic Heritage Fair, we were able to connect with another 65 people. We distributed 30 'Kits' with BiLingual voter Registration information at the Fair. This brings our total contacts for September to 237.

In August, thanks to assistance from ADRC, we were able to get information to citizens who aren't able to get to our events through the distribution of 75 'Kits'.

Election Hero Day - Monday, November 4, 2024

Election Hero Day is a national day of celebration on Monday, November 4, 2024. On this day, nonprofits, business leaders, public officials and many more will celebrate the tremendous contributions local election administrators, poll workers, state officials, and postal workers are making to ensure a safe, secure and accessible voting experience for all voters!

By celebrating the work of roughly one million Americans who make our elections possible, Election Hero Day aims to remind all eligible voters that elections in our nation are locally-run, which is proven to increase trust in elections and results.

To honor this year’s election heroes, we hope you will join us in thanking the friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues in your community who have selflessly given their time to ensure our elections run smoothly.

Committees and Volunteer Opportunities

LWVDC Legislative Committee:

You may or may not know that our Legislative Committee monitors bills of interest as they work their way through the Wisconsin Legislature. They can, as needed, coordinate with the Action Committee and the League’s Observer Corp. They have met with both our Assembly and Senate representatives in each of the last two budget cycles to discuss and promote legislation that affects the county and falls under a League position.

The committee also participates in the LWV Wisconsin Legislative Committee. The LWVWI has developed State Budget Recommendations that will be sent to the Governor as the new biennium budget cycle begins in 2025.

The state league priorities are Voting Rights, Economic Security, Natural Resources, Health Care (including Reproductive and Mental Health), and Education. For more details on these priorities, contact Dan Powers at dan.powers@lwvdoorcounty.org.

LWVDC Social Event!

It has been a busy year! It's time to relax and socialize with fellow League members and friends. We would like to celebrate all our work with a special shoutout to all the folks that helped with voter registration assistance/education and to our Observers for all their work and their contributions that make the League Lens column in the Pulse possible.

We hope you can join us on Wednesday, November 20th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Hatch Distilling Co. in Egg Harbor. The evening will be catered by Mauricio's. Come to relax and socialize with fellow League members and savor our time together as we reflect on 2024. We welcome anyone interested in the League!
